Two of the best headsets you can buy take wildly different approaches. Here's how to choose.
The fundamental difference
The Quest 3 is wireless and self-contained — no other hardware required. The PSVR2 is tethered to a PlayStation 5 and can't work without one. That single fact will decide it for many people: if you don't own a PS5, the Quest 3 is the obvious choice.
Display and visuals
The PSVR2 uses OLED HDR panels with deeper blacks and richer colour, plus eye-tracked foveated rendering for sharp detail where you look. The Quest 3 has higher raw resolution and clearer pancake lenses. In practice, PSVR2 wins on punchy contrast for cinematic games; Quest 3 wins on all-round clarity and convenience.
Games and ecosystem
The PSVR2 leans on premium AAA experiences and PS5-quality graphics. The Quest 3 has the largest VR library overall, mixed reality, fitness apps, social spaces and optional PC VR. PSVR2 is about a handful of stunning showpieces; Quest 3 is about doing everything.
Which should you buy?
Own a PS5 and want gorgeous single-player VR? The PSVR2 is fantastic value at around $400. Want freedom, mixed reality, fitness and the widest library with no other hardware? The Quest 3 is the better all-rounder.
