The headset is only part of the story. Here's what VR actually costs once you add games and accessories.

The headset itself

Standalone headsets range from $299 (Quest 3S) to $499 (Quest 3) and up to $999 (Quest Pro). Console VR like the PSVR2 is around $400 but needs a $400–500 PS5. PC VR headsets run $500–1,000 and need a gaming PC costing $800 or more.

Games and subscriptions

Many great VR games cost $20–30, with blockbusters around $40. Budget $50–100 to build a starter library. Optional subscriptions like Supernatural (fitness) add a monthly fee, while a huge amount of content — Gorilla Tag, social apps, demos — is free.

Accessories worth buying

A comfort head strap ($30–70), a carrying case ($20–40), and a longer Link cable or extra batteries are the most common add-ons. None are essential on day one, but a better strap is the upgrade most owners recommend first.

Total realistic cost

Plan on around $350–400 all-in for a Quest 3S setup with a couple of games and a strap, or $600–700 for a fully kitted Quest 3. That's still cheaper than a new gaming console plus games.
