Can you trust a used or refurbished VR headset? Often yes — if you know what to check.

Certified refurbished is the sweet spot

Meta and major retailers sell certified-refurbished Quests that are tested, cleaned and warrantied, typically at 15–25% off new. These are a genuinely good deal because you get near-new condition with buyer protection.

Buying used privately

Marketplaces can be cheaper still but riskier. Always confirm the headset has been factory reset and removed from the seller's Meta account, or you won't be able to use it. Check lenses for scratches and the foam for wear.

What wears out

VR headsets are fairly durable. The most common issues are scuffed lenses, worn face foam (easily replaced), controller drift, and reduced battery capacity on older units. Inspect or ask about these before buying.

Our advice

For most buyers, certified refurbished from an official source is the best balance of price and peace of mind. Save private used deals for when the discount is steep and you can verify the headset in person.
