Unboxed a new Quest 3? Follow these steps to get into VR quickly and safely.

Before you start

Charge the headset fully, download the Meta Horizon app on your phone, and create or sign into a Meta account. Clear a play space of at least 2m × 2m and remove trip hazards, pets and fragile objects. Good lighting helps the cameras track accurately.

Step 1: Pair and update

Power on the headset, follow the on-screen prompts, and pair it with the Meta Horizon phone app. Connect to Wi-Fi and let it download the latest software update — this can take a while on first boot, so be patient.

Step 2: Set up your boundary

The Quest 3 will ask you to set up a boundary (formerly called Guardian) on the floor using a controller. Stay inside this boundary while playing and the headset will warn you when you get close to the edge. For seated experiences you can choose a stationary boundary instead.

Our boundary setup guide explains Stationary and Roomscale in more detail, and what to do if the headset keeps forgetting your play area.

Step 3: Adjust fit and IPD

Loosen the strap, place the headset on, then tighten from the back. Adjust the lens spacing (IPD) by sliding the lenses until the image is crisp and comfortable. A good fit dramatically improves clarity and reduces fatigue.

If the picture still looks soft after adjusting, our blurry Quest fix guide covers lens spacing settings, glasses, eye relief and lens cleaning step by step.

Step 4: Get your first apps

Open the Store and grab a few essentials — Beat Saber for fun, a free experience like First Encounters to show off mixed reality, and YouTube VR for media. You're ready to go.

What Meta's own setup guide adds

Meta's official Quest 3 setup guide lists a few small jobs that are easy to miss: peel off the lens protection films and strap paper, remove the battery blockers from the controllers before you try to turn them on, and adjust the lens spacing and headset depth for your face. It also confirms that you pair the headset with the Meta Horizon app during setup, but you will not need to open the app every time you play.

Keep the headset plugged in or well charged during the first update. Interrupting an update is one of the few ways to end up with a headset that will not start properly.

If setup stalls

If the controllers do not respond, pull the battery tabs and follow our controller pairing and troubleshooting guide. If the headset goes black or will not power on part way through, our Quest 3 not turning on guide walks through charging checks, the hard reboot and the boot menu. For anything else, the Meta Quest Help Centre is the official source.

Next steps once you are in

Once setup is done, it is worth reading our VR comfort tips before long sessions, and checking the Meta Quest 3 specs page for features such as mixed reality and PC VR that you may want to try next.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a phone to set up a Meta Quest 3?

Yes. Meta's setup guide has you pair the headset with the Meta Horizon app on your phone during first-time setup. After that you do not need to open the app every time you play.

How much space do I need for Quest 3 room-scale play?

Clear an area of roughly 2m by 2m for room-scale games, free of trip hazards and fragile objects. For seated or standing-only apps you can choose a stationary boundary instead.

Why won't my Quest 3 controllers turn on during setup?

New controllers ship with a battery blocker tab. Remove it, then press any button to wake the controller. If it still will not respond, re-pair it through the Meta Horizon app.
