Dead controllers are one of the most common Quest problems, and almost all of them come down to batteries, pairing or tracking. Here is how to tell which, and how to fix each one.

Work out which kind of problem you have

Controller faults on a Quest fall into three groups. If the controller shows no light and the headset does not see it at all, you are looking at a power or battery problem. If it lights up but the headset never connects to it, it is a pairing problem. If it connects but drifts, jumps or floats away in the headset view, it is a tracking problem. Each has a different fix, so it is worth spending ten seconds working out which one you have.

The Quest 3 and Quest 3S ship with Touch Plus controllers, which Meta says work only with those two headsets. The Quest 2 and original Quest use earlier Touch controllers, and the Quest Pro uses rechargeable Touch Pro controllers. The steps below apply to all of them unless noted, and our Quest 3S and Quest 2 pages list which controllers come with each headset.

Fix 1: Batteries and the pull tab

On a brand new headset, the most common cause is the plastic battery tab that is still in the controller. Meta's Quest 3 setup guide tells you to remove the battery blockers before first use. Open the battery cover, pull out the tab and close it again.

For controllers that have been working, swap in a fresh AA battery and make sure it is seated the right way round. Meta's Touch Plus guide says to insert the battery with the positive end towards the bottom of the controller, and that a red dot in the headset's status display means the battery is low. Cheap or old batteries can show enough charge to light the LED but not enough to keep a stable connection, so try a new pair from a different pack before assuming the controller is faulty. Press any button to wake the controller after the headset is on.

Fix 2: Re-pair through the Meta Horizon app

Meta is clear that pairing is done through the phone app: its pairing article states that controllers cannot be paired without the Meta Horizon app. With the headset switched on and nearby, open the Meta Horizon app, open the menu, go to Devices and select your headset. Choose Headset settings, then Controllers, then Pair new controller, and pick left or right.

When the app asks, hold Menu and Y on the left controller, or the Meta button and B on the right controller, until the LED blinks and then stays lit. If a controller was previously paired but is misbehaving, unpair it from the same Controllers screen first and then pair it again. Meta's tips for when pairing fails are to make sure the headset is on and unlocked, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, keep the phone and headset on the same Wi-Fi network and update the app.

Fix 3: Tracking drift and floating hands

If the controller connects but the virtual hand jitters or drifts, the headset cameras are struggling to see it. Turn on more light in the room, avoid direct sunlight and large mirrors, and wipe the headset's outer cameras with a dry microfibre cloth. Hold the Meta button to recentre your view. Our cleaning and care guide covers how to clean cameras and lenses without scratching them.

Meta also warns that unsupported third-party accessories such as controller sleeves, covers and stickers can affect pairing and tracking. If you have added grips or skins, remove them and test again. Some grips work fine, but anything that covers the tracking surfaces can cause exactly the drifting described here. Our accessories guide has more on choosing add-ons that will not get in the way.

Fix 4: Restart, update and, if needed, reset

Restart the headset, then check for a software update in the Meta Horizon app under your headset's settings. If a Touch Plus controller is blinking an error pattern, Meta's suggested order is to reinsert the battery, restart the headset, unpair and re-pair, update the software and then hard reboot by holding the power button for 30 seconds.

A factory reset is Meta's last-resort suggestion if a controller still will not pair. It erases the headset, so only try it after everything else and read our power and reset troubleshooting guide first. During setup after a reset, Meta's instructions are to pair the controllers when prompted and keep the headset on Wi-Fi in case a firmware update is needed.

When to replace a controller

If a controller shows no LED activity at all with fresh batteries, Meta says it may be defective and points you to Meta Store Support. Check warranty options there before buying a replacement, and buy any replacement from Meta or a reputable retailer so you know it is genuine and compatible with your headset. Remember that Touch Plus controllers are not designed for the Quest 2, and older Touch controllers are not designed for the Quest 3 or 3S.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Quest 3 controller not working?

The most common causes are a flat or badly seated AA battery, the battery pull tab on a new controller, a lost pairing or poor tracking conditions. Replace the battery, re-pair through the Meta Horizon app and improve the room lighting before assuming a fault.

How do I pair a Meta Quest 3 controller?

Open the Meta Horizon app, go to Devices, choose your headset, then Headset settings, Controllers and Pair new controller. Hold Menu and Y on the left controller, or the Meta button and B on the right, until the light blinks and then stays on.

Can I pair Quest controllers without the phone app?

Meta's help article says controllers cannot be paired without the Meta Horizon app, so you need the app on a phone signed in to the same Meta account.

Can Quest 3 controllers work with a Quest 2?

Meta states that Touch Plus controllers work only with the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S, so they are not a supported option for a Quest 2.

Why does my controller drift in VR?

Drift is usually a tracking issue: low light, sunlight, mirrors, dirty headset cameras or sleeves and stickers covering the controller. Fix the environment, clean the cameras, remove covers and hold the Meta button to recentre.
