A Quest that will not power on is usually a charging, update or boot problem rather than a dead headset. Here is the order we would work through, from the easy checks to the last resort.
Start with the five-second checks
Most reports of a Quest 3 or Quest 3S that is "completely dead" turn out to be a flat battery, a cable that is not delivering power, or a headset that is on but showing nothing. Before you assume the worst, look at the status light on the side of the headset. According to Meta's own status light guide, white means the headset is powered on, orange means it is charging, green means the battery is full and red means the battery is dead.
If the light is white, the headset is on and your problem is a black display rather than power, so skip ahead to the hard reboot step. If the light is red or there is no light at all, the next job is to get some charge into it.
Step 1: Charge it properly, and give it time
Plug the headset into a wall socket using the cable and power adapter that came in the box. Meta's charging article says the Quest 3 and Quest 3S use an 18 W adapter, and warns that lower-rated adapters, non-Power Delivery USB ports on a computer and third-party cables can all slow charging or stop it working properly. A phone charger or a laptop USB-A port is the most common reason a Quest seems to charge but never turns on.
Leave it plugged in for at least half an hour before trying the power button again. A battery that has been fully drained can take a while before it has enough charge to boot. If the light never changes from off to orange while plugged in, try a different wall socket and, if you have one, a different USB-C Power Delivery adapter rated 18 W or more. If nothing ever lights up with known-good power, that points to a hardware fault, which is covered at the end of this guide.
Also unplug anything else attached to the headset. Battery straps, USB-C accessories and third-party power banks can interfere with charging and booting, so test the headset on its own first. Our Quest battery guide explains how to get the most out of each charge once it is working again.
Step 2: Hold the power button for longer than you think
A Quest that has frozen while asleep can look exactly like one that is switched off. Press and hold the power button on the left side of the headset for around 30 seconds, release it, wait a moment, then press it again normally. Meta lists this 30-second hold as a hard reboot in its troubleshooting steps, and it clears most freezes that happen after an update or after the headset has been left in a bag.
Make sure the proximity sensor between the lenses is not covered or dirty. The display only wakes when the sensor detects your face, so a headset sitting on a desk can appear dead even when it is running. Putting it on, or covering the sensor with a finger, is a quick way to check.
Step 3: Use the boot menu if the screen stays black
If the status light suggests the headset is on but the lenses stay black, Meta's black screen article recommends a hard reboot from the boot screen. Press and hold the power and volume down buttons together for at least 10 seconds until the boot screen appears. Use the volume buttons to highlight Boot device, then press the power button to select it.
If you see the Meta logo or a chip icon and nothing else, the headset may be installing an update. Meta advises waiting up to 15 minutes before you try anything else, because interrupting an update can make things worse. Keep it plugged in while you wait.
Step 4: Update the software from your phone
When the headset does start but behaves strangely, check for a software update. In the Meta Horizon app on your phone, open the menu, go to Devices, choose your headset and look for Software update under the headset settings. Your phone and headset need to be on the same Wi-Fi network and signed in to the same Meta account for this to work.
Step 5: Factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset erases everything stored on the headset, including your account login, downloaded games and any save data that has not been backed up to the cloud. Purchases stay on your account and can be downloaded again. Meta's factory reset instructions use the same boot menu: turn the headset off, hold power and volume down until the boot screen loads, highlight Factory reset with the volume buttons and confirm with the power button. Meta suggests having at least 50 percent battery before you start.
Only do this after the charging, hard reboot and update steps have failed. In our experience most "won't turn on" headsets come back at step 1 or 2.

When it is probably a hardware fault
If the headset shows no light at all on known-good 18 W power after a long charge, will not reach the boot screen, or keeps restarting in a loop after a reset, it is time to stop troubleshooting at home. Meta's black screen guide points to its self-serve returns page to check whether your headset qualifies for a repair or replacement, and to Meta Store Support for anything else. Start any warranty claim on Meta's own website, and be wary of third-party sites or ads that claim to offer official Meta support.
If you are weighing a repair against an upgrade, our Meta Quest 3 specs page and Quest 3 vs Quest 3S comparison can help you decide what to buy next.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Meta Quest 3 not turning on even though it is plugged in?
Usually the charger is not delivering enough power. Meta recommends the included 18 W adapter and cable plugged into a wall socket. Phone chargers and computer USB ports that do not support Power Delivery can charge very slowly or not at all. Leave it on the proper charger for at least 30 minutes, then hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
What do the status light colours on a Quest 3 mean?
Meta says white means the headset is on, orange means it is charging, green means it is fully charged and red means the battery is dead. No light while plugged in usually means it is not charging.
How do I hard reboot a Meta Quest 3?
Hold the power button for about 30 seconds. If the screen stays black, hold power and volume down together for at least 10 seconds to open the boot screen, then choose Boot device with the volume buttons and press power.
Will a factory reset delete my games?
It removes everything stored on the headset, including installed games and any save data not backed up to the cloud. Games you bought stay on your Meta account and can be downloaded again after the reset.
Who should I contact if my Quest 3 is still dead?
Use Meta's official help centre: the self-serve returns page to check repair or replacement eligibility, or Meta Store Support for other questions. Be wary of third-party sites or ads that claim to offer official Meta support.
